Scientific American Archival Cover Art

Sunday, October 5th, 2008

Click through this Scientifican American Cover Art Design archive going back to 1845.

I thought it interesting the magazine incorporated a intricate border around the cover art during WWI (below).

The border would disappear at the end of the war, replaced by open spacing around the image edges pointing to a more permeable border.

Also in the late 1920s early 30s, the design begins to lean heavily on the black and white coloring distinct to the classic 1950-1970s covers.

Reverse Graffiti Project

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

By power washing their graffiti designs onto pollution-caked city walls, the Reverse Graffiti Project forces city officials embittered by street art to remove the city’s soot and dirt in order to remove the art.

So, either the city is clean or it’s artful?  Sounds pretty win-win to me.

In fact, I like the idea so much I just deleted my commentary about the Reverse Graffiti Project recent advertising work for Clorox’s new “green bleach,” GreenWorks.

Simone de Beauvoir, Art Shay and The Truth in Gestures

Monday, September 1st, 2008

About a week ago I heard, in the background of my day, a NPR interview with the photographer, Art Shay, who took these famous naked pictures of Simone de Beauvoir.

I cannot find the interview now. There may be better articles than this out there, but I could not find one readily. I also could not find one that did not dilute the debate about whether the magazine fails to honor an influential theorist for her works or succeeds in honoring, as a part of her work, her courageous and unselfconscious sexual freedom, by commenting on “how nice her ass does look.”

Does this mean that if her ass was wrinkled and frumpy the truth about the gesture would be easier to come by?

Well, I’ve made it pretty clear that I loved Your Daily Awesome, Chas Bowie’s blog of daily awesomeness that he posted on daily for one year. When he stopped posting on YDA to pursue his more specific photography interests, I was sad.

Now, he has a new blog about “photographic history, criticism, and theory,” and I am happy.

What can I say? Human emotions can be simple.
